Eating Fish, Learning to Fish, and Fishing

Michael Marks

We all know the famous saying - "Give a man a fish, he eats for a day. Teach a man to fish, he eats for a lifetime."

But what if you're better off hunting or gathering right now? Maybe you don't have time to go fish - you're too busy processing your current catch of the day.

OK - I'm going a bit too far with the fishing metaphor. But it applies to product managers!

Sometimes, you need someone to do product management tasks for you. The role of the Product Manager is not the same in any organization, so different disciplines are emphasized depending on your manager, team, culture, and company. Yet we see so many different things that PMs are supposed to be responsible for - how can we effectively perform competitive analysis, pricing sensitivity analysis, P&L assessment, participate in design sprints, update roadmaps, write new PBIs, present updates to customers, attend backlog grooming and sprint plannings and sprint retros and sprint demos, and all the other various things on your plate? Sometimes you need someone to do the fishing for you, so that all you have to do is eat it.

Other times, you might decide that you or your team need to start doing a PM related activity that you haven't done before. A deep dive into a market analysis, competitive analysis, or pricing and packaging experiments are things PMs should do, but many don't know where to start if they haven't done it before. This is where it makes sense to hire a fishing charter - have a captain fish with you while you learn the skills to do it yourself.

Whether you just need to know where the best spots are to fish or need someone to do some fishing for you, shoot me an email at michael@product-bridge.com and let's talk!
